urinary system
The Urinary System consists of six different parts; two kidneys, ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. It's purpose is to eliminate waste from the body, as well as regulate blood volume and pressure. They also control levels of electrolytes and metabolites, and also regulate blood pH. On a typical day the kidneys filter between 120-150 quarts of blood and that produces approximately 1-2 quarts of urine. The urine then flows through the kidneys, to the bladder, then finally through the ureters. Then the bladder stores the urine and signals the body to use the bathroom when the urine builds up. When the bladder is ready to release the urine, it exits by going through the urethra. When the body is in balance it is called "homeostasis". The kidneys are considered to one of the major homeostatic organs in the body because of their critical role in filtering fluids and wastes through the body.
Disease list
BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)- This disease is an excessive growth of cells. It can cause problems with infection and the most effective treatment is surgery to remove the prostate. BPH usually is not cancerous, but can be harmful if it reaches other body parts.
The most common symptom is difficulty urinating as the tube begins to close off.
Renal Calculi (Kidney Stones)- These “stones” are formed in the kidneys, they blocked off the urine flow and can cause immense lower back pain. If the stones are too large, they can cut the ureter as they pass through it. Kidney stones that are too large to naturally pass through the body have to be removed surgically. Many patients have stated that the pain they experience from kidney stones is the closest thing for a man to feel what actual childbirth is like.
Cystitis v/s pyelonephritis- “Infection of the bladder”. This disease occurs when bacteria from cystitis travels up to the kidneys and causes this infection. As the blood runs through the kidneys to be filtered it gets infected from the bacteria and causes a much bigger issue. This disease is most commonly caused by soaking in bath water, swimming in pools or/and holding urine in for a long period of time. It is more typical for woman to get bacterial infections because their urethra is smaller than a mans.
Prostatitis- Meaning “inflammation of the prostate”. This is caused by a bacterial infection and this can cause burning during urination, frequent need to urinate, and pain in the lower back. Chronic Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics. Do diagnosis this condition doctors survey symptoms, and if the symptoms indicate this condition a digital rectal examination is given.
Renal Failure- CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) it comes in stages, nephrons start to die in the kidneys. At this point one must conserve their kidneys by drinking cranberry juice, no alcohol or drugs, watch for intake of sugar, proteins, medicine. This will help cause the kidneys little stress because once the kidneys start to die they do not regenerate. Treatments such as dialysis can help to filter the blood, but if this disease is left untreated one could die of ARF (Acute Renal Failure).

"Air pollution associated with higher rates of chronic kidney disease"
Research has shown that there is a correlation between pollution from the environment and chronic kidney disease. The highest risks are for those more sensitive, such as the elderly. "The investigators found a link between the prevalence of CKD and the county level of particulate matter, even after taking into account patient risk factors for CKD including age, diabetes, and hypertension. If air pollution is a risk factor for CKD, the impact is likely to be even greater in countries where pollution levels are much higher than in the U.S. Future investigations should include lab-based diagnosis of CKD, longitudinal data, measures of multiple air pollutants and individual exposure, and more extensive control of confounding factors," said Dr. Bragg-Gresham."
